A car crashed into a parked car outside the Memorial Hall in Shannon where a Matariki celebration was being held.
A person was apprehended by a local mob after the vehicle they were driving hit “a number of parked cars” outside a Matariki celebration in Shannon.
Stuff understands the incident happened outside the Memorial Hall on Grey St where a Matariki event was being held.
A person who lived nearby said a vehicle hit road spikes after being chased by police and crashed into a parked car outside the hall.
“Locals around here don’t take kindly to these types of people, so they went and apprehended them.
“Especially since there were kids at the event,” they said.
In an emailed statement, a police spokesperson said around 12.30pm police spotted a stolen vehicle in Foxton.
Road spikes were placed but the vehicle avoided them.
However, it hit a “number of parked vehicles” parked outside the Memorial Hall.
“It then collided with a stationary vehicle in the middle of Grey St in Shannon, where community were together at an event celebrating Matariki.
“An officer suffered a head injury while attempting to apprehend the driver of the offending vehicle.”
They said the driver was in custody and the officer was receiving medical attention.
A reporter at the scene said there were “several police officers” and a lot of people gathered on the street.
“[The incident] appears to be focused between the school and the hall.
“The ambulance was still there and a tow truck was preparing to load a vehicle on.
“The street is also cordoned off,” they said.
Horowhenua District Council chief executive Monique Davidson said it was a sad incident because the community was coming together for the “joyous and special Matariki event”.
The celebration was stained by the actions of an individual, she said in a statement.
In a Facebook post, Horowhenua District Council, which was the host of the event, asked people to stay inside.
“There is an ongoing police incident unfolding in Shannon. For the time being, please stay inside if you are local to the area.
“Matariki celebrations in Shannon have been cancelled,” it said.
