SBS Bank Southland Stags have struck up a partnership with the Hawthorndale Care Village – a decision that acknowledges the issue of cognitive health among former rugby players.

The $35 million Hawthorndale project, now under construction in Invercargill, is a dementia care facility for Southland..

The collaboration means the care village logo will be printed on the upper back of all playing jerseys and replicas, and also includes backing for awareness campaigns and donation drives.

Rugby Southland director of rugby Matt Saunders, said the partnership “reflects our commitment to cognitive and brain health advocacy’’ and the team’s dedication to giving back to a cause that affected families in Southland.

A director on the Hawthorndale Care Village board, Paddy O’Brien, called the collaboration a remarkable initiative that emphasises the importance of unity in addressing a community need.

“By raising awareness and encouraging donations, we can make a tangible difference in the lives of individuals and families affected by dementia,’’ he said.

As the village construction progresses, there will be a further push to secure additional funding for outfitting the self-contained homes.

Rugby Southland general manager Steve Mitchell said: “We hope that this partnership inspires other organisations to come forward and make a meaningful impact.”
