Strong winds and chilly temperatures are on the way for much of the country.
The milder temperatures that part of the country has been enjoying over the Matariki long weekend will turn cold overnight, but not for long.
MetService has issued a strong wind watch with severe gales a possibility in exposed places across Hawke’s Bay, Canterbury High Country and inland Marlborough. Strong winds are also expected in Otago and Southland.
A cold front will move across the South Island on Saturday night and into Sunday morning, bringing with some snow in the south.
A road snowfall warning has been issued for Lewis Pass (SH7) and Arthur’s Pass (SH73) until Sunday afternoon. There is also a warning overnight Saturday for Crown Range Rd. Milford Rd (SH94) will also have a road snowfall warning in place until 11pm Sunday.

Heavy rain is expected on the West Coast of the South Island, but showers should clear over the South Island by Sunday afternoon.
The cold front with strong winds will head north on Sunday afternoon.
Milder temperatures above average for this time of the year should start “bouncing back” early in the week, a MetService spokesperson said.
