Hawaiian professional surfer Mikala Jones has died after severing an artery while riding a wave in Indonesia.

The 44-year-old reportedly severing his femoral artery while surfing in the Mentawai Islands. The injury caused Jones to die due to blood loss.

Legends of the surfing world have paid tribute to Jones, including three-time world champion Mick Fanning.

Australian Fanning has shared a photo on Instagram of himself and Jones standing alongside each other.

Fanning, who survived a shark attack off the coast of South Africa in 2015, accompanied the photo with a heartfelt message.

“So shattered to hear the news. Mikala you were one of a kind. Funny, mellow, an explorer, a pioneer but most of all loving husband and father,’’ wrote Fanning.

“Going to miss your sense of humour and classic one liners. Love how you always kept it real but were a true ambassador of aloha.’’

Fanning also said Jones’ family were in his thoughts.

“To Emma and the girls sending so much love. Mikala loved you more than anything and would always be showing us pictures and videos with the proudest smile on his face. Grateful to have known you the past 25 years and honoured to go exploring with you in that time.

“You will be missed. #MJalldayMay you forever get barrelled whilst guiding your family from above. Love you brother.’’

Jones’ daughter Isabella shared several touching photos of her and her father together, and explained that her “dad got into a bad surfing accident and didn’t make it”.

She added that she was “in so much disbelief right now, this doesn’t feel real” but that she was “happy he was doing what he loved the most.”
