Three youths allegedly robbed a convenience store after pulling up in a stolen vehicle and assaulting the store owner with a weapon.
The group then raided the cigarette cabinet and stole an estimated $5000 worth of cigarettes before fleeing, said the other store owner, the husband of the woman allegedly assaulted. He did not want to give their names as they feared for their safety, he said.
The incident happened on Lincoln Rd in Addington, Christchurch, about 3.30pm on Monday.
A police spokesperson said one of the youths assaulted the shop attendant before the group fled with their haul of cigarettes.

Police arrested one youth on Monday and referred them to Youth Aid. A police spokesperson said no further arrests had been made on Tuesday and enquiries were ongoing.
The store owner said his wife was “still in shock” after one of the alleged offenders ran at her with the weapon he described as similar to a screwdriver.
“It was a close call. The way he came at her, if it had punctured her, it could have been a disaster,” he said.
It was the first time the store had been robbed in their 15 years of operation, he said, and he was “really worried” about it happening again.
”We work hard on a daily basis, and this is not a nice experience we’ve had.”
Police were continuing inquiries, “including viewing CCTV footage of the incident”, a spokesperson said.
The weapon used was not a firearm, but police did not say what it was.
Anyone who was in the area of Lincoln Rd, near Parlane St, about the time of the incident is asked call police on 105 and quote file number 230227/1809.
