A twister that struck several homes in the Central Otago township of Clyde “sounded like a train” as it crashed through around 3.20pm Tuesday.
A woman who lives next to a house that had its roof blown off said she was “scared” when the tornado hit. She said it only lasted a very short time, but “it sounded like a train” as the wind picked up and things went flying.
“It was horrible,” she said.
“I was just sitting inside reading my book and a big wind just blew through with leaves and rubbish flying everywhere. I was too scared to look outside because I thought I might get blown away.”
She said the roof from the house next door was lying across the top of her driveway, leaving her unable to get out.
Firefighters remained at the scene, after the initial response drew emergency responders to the “weather event” from Clyde and Alexandra, an Emergency New Zealand spokesperson said
On arrival, firefighters immediately found one house had lost its roof, while several other properties had sustained property damage.
