Wild winds buffet south – Queens Park entrance closed

Strong wind gusts have been felling and destabilising trees around Invercargill, prompting the city council to ask people to let it know where trees have fallen or are in danger of coming down.

The council is fielding calls on its 03 2111777 number and has issued the warning: “Please take caution in Queens Park and around the city during these conditions.”

The Queen’s Dr entrance to Queen’s Park has been temporarily closed, where a dangerously destabilised tree is being taken down.

Scott Rd has also temporarily been closed between Rockdale Rd and Boxall St due to a fallen tree, and there are reports of a trampoline on Rockdale Rd.

A council representative said the high winds had “caused a bit of havoc’’ around the city.

The council has been undertaking a programme of removing some of the park’s trees due to the risks previously exposed in strong winds.
