“Every person that trusted me with their image, I’m so grateful for you all. If this business was just about the clothes I would do it for the rest of my life, but unfortunately it’s not! The politics, the lies and false narratives finally got me! You win…I’m out.”

A fixture on the Hollywood red carpet styling circuit, Roach is closely associated with the Dune star, who was his first major client. Their working relationship is widely considered one of the best celebrity-stylist collaborations of late.

Roach has also worked with a wider rota celebrities including Megan Thee Stallion, Kerry Washington, Celine Dion, Anya Taylor-Joy, Ariana Grande, Priyanka Chopra and Lindsay Lohan.

Hunter Schafer, who made best dressed headlines earlier in the week for her daring Ann Demeulemeester outfit worn to the Vanity Fair Oscars after-party, was styled by Roach.

Roach sees his role as bigger than purely a stylist, referring instead to his role as an “image architect”.

While the Chicago native hasn’t yet given any more explanation on the ‘politics’ and ‘lies’ that lie behind his withdrawal, fans on social media are speculating a potential rift with Zendaya may play a part. Many have pointed to a video from last week’s Louis Vuitton fashion show in Paris which shows Roach unimpressed that he has been allocated a seat in the second row, while Zendaya sits in the first.

The surprise announcement, which comes amid speculation the Euphoria star is about to sign an endorsement deal with Louis Vuitton, garnered a bevvy of commiserations from Roach’s fans and counterparts.

Australian fashion journalist and former editor of InStyle magazine Laura Brown wrote, “You are a singular talent, my love. You keep me and so many others inspired. Take some time. ❤️”

Naomi Campbell refuted Roach’s declaration, writing, “Law I won’t let you !!!! We don’t quit .. strived to [sic] hard.”

Meanwhile, British Vogue editor-in-chief Edward Enninful reassured Roach that he “will always have a home” at the publication. Roach is the magazine’s contributing West Coast editor.

Instagram account and fashion watchdog Diet Prada surmised many people’s thoughts, commenting simply, “????????????”

Roach was the first-ever recipient of the Stylist Award at the 2022 CFDA Fashion Awards.

In 2021, he was named The Hollywood Reporter’s top stylist of the year. At the time the publication said the tastemaker “isn’t just about creating red carpet looks to go viral; he’s had a transformative effect on the industry itself.
