The number of new Covid-19 cases reported in the past week was up nearly 3000 cases on the week prior.

There were 14,657​ cases of Covid-19 reported across the country in the past week, officials say.

The Ministry of Health released its latest weekly update – covering the period from Monday, May 15 to Sunday, May 21 – on Monday afternoon.

The number of reported cases was up nearly 3000 cases (2918)​compared to 11,739​​ the week prior – an increase of 24.8%​.

As of midnight on Sunday, 247 people were in hospital with Covid-19, the same number as this time last week. Eight were in an intensive care or high dependency care unit.

The seven-day rolling average of new daily cases was 1891​​, up from 1672​ last week.

There has been a recent increase in cases in the 5-14-year-old age group, with reported cases more than doubling since the school holidays, Stuff earlier reported.
