A person has died after a “serious incident” involving a fallen tree in Hagley Park, Christchurch.

Police said they were alerted just after 9.50am and have cordoned off a large area of the park near the United Croquet Club and Te Kura Tennis Club.

Stuff understands the incident involves an arborist from Treetech working on trees in the park.

A man in orange overalls, sitting next to a felled tree, was seen being comforted by police officers.

A spokesperson for Treetech said the company’s thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased, and with our colleagues at Treetech.

A police spokesperson said the matter has been referred to WorkSafe and a coroner.

A joint statement from Andrew Rutledge, head of parks Christchurch City Council, and Chris Walsh, managing director of Treetech Specialist Treecare said “this morning there was a serious incident in Hagley Park involving a member of the Treetech team.

“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased, and with our colleagues at Treetech.

Given an investigation is underway, we won’t be making any further comment at this time.”
