Traffic has been disrupted in the southbound lanes of State Highway 1 in Wellington.

Waka Kotahi said there were lane closures in place due to a police incident and to expect delays in the area.

The Restore Passenger Rail group, which took action earlier this week, said it was taking action to block a busy Wellington motorway on Thursday morning.

On Tuesday, the group blocked State Highway 1 in Kilbirnie with a banner and one woman stuck herself to the road with a concrete-like substance.

The road was closed for about an hour, causing major traffic disruptions during rush hour.

Three people were arrested and charged with endangering transport, a police spokesperson said.

Two women aged 64 and 67 and a 19-year-old man appeared in Wellington District Court on Tuesday.
