Locals are nicknaming a large metal sphere which washed up in Japan as “godzilla egg”.

The purpose of the sphere, which is about 1.5 metres across, is unclear, reports NHK, but scans have revealed it is hollow, leading many to believe it is a buoy.

Locals in Hamamatsu, where the sphere came ashore, have taken to calling it “godzilla egg”, or just plain “mooring buoy”, reports the BBC.

Police have cordoned off the object, and have said it will soon be removed.
