Nelsonians descended en masse to this year’s New Zealand Sotheby’s International Realty Nelson Opera in the Park on Saturday night, slinging their camping chairs on their shoulders, packing rounds of camembert and hauling chilly bins to settle in for a night of spectacular entertainment under the stars.
The voices of opera singers Oliver Sewell and Madeleine Pierard, accompanied by the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, seemed to soar as high as the Grampians, while Annie Crummer delighted at having a younger generation of fans sing along to “For Today” in the event’s first mosh pit.
She was accompanied by Nelsonians Tessa Quayle and Dan Kendrick.
Mayor Nick Smith poignantly acknowledged the devastation that Cyclone Gabrielle had wrought elsewhere in the country: “Homes and roads can be fixed, lives are lost forever.”
Ending the show with a bilingual version of Crowded House’s 1986 hit Don’t Dream It’s Over, Stan Walker, suave in a turtleneck and blazer, had his own contingent of fangirls near the stage, alternately screaming or making cellphone footage.
A carbon neutral event, those who attended were asked to take their rubbish with them. The chairs were squeezed back together, the now lighter chilly bins lifted, and the turf was left, green and flawless with not a dandelion in sight after an evening of music and beauty.
