Police in Dunedin were busy dealing wth drivers behaving badly.

How many people can fit in a Ford Focus? At least nine, police in Dunedin found.

Police pulled over the vehicle on Cumberland St on Sunday about 1.45pm, Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond said.

The vehicle had nine people inside, and the 17-year-old driver told police that he was ‘’helping his mates out’’.

He was issued with an infringement notice for carrying unsafe passengers, and was educated about the danger of overloaded vehicles.

Police also attended a car crash on the northern motorway south of Waitati, on Saturday about 8am.

The 61-year-old male driver fell asleep while driving home from work, crossing the centreline and ended-up in a ditch.

The man was taken to Dunedin Hospital with a suspected neck injury, Bond said.

Police attended a car crash on Andersons Bay Rd, after a street race between an 19-year-old male and a 18-year-old female, on Sunday about 2am.

The pair raced their respective vehicles down Cumberland St, repeatedly changing lanes, but as they got near a moderate bend the younger driver lost control of her Nissan vehicle, hitting the kerb and then a light pole.

That caused her vehicle to flip, with the vehicle ending-up on its roof.

Both drivers were charged with dangerous driving and operating a vehicle in race, with the pair due to appear in the Dunedin District Court on Friday.

Police also pulled over a motorcyclist on Crawford St on Friday about 5.15pm.

The driver did not have a motorcycle licence, and his car licence was also expired. He admitted to drinking beer that afternoon and was found to be twice over the legal limit.

On Saturday, about 2.50am police stopped a vehicle on Castle St after the 18-year-old driver was spotted swerving in his lane.

He recorded a breath alcohol reading of 925 micrograms (mcgs) of alcohol per litre of breath, despite being a zero alcohol limit for those under 20.

The man’s licence was suspended, Bond said.

Police also pulled over a 31-year-old male driver on Forth St, after he was spotted crossing the centreline on Sunday about 7.45am.

The man blew recorded a breath alcohol reading of 930mcgs of alcohol per litre of breath, almost four times the legal limit.

Meanwhile, police arrested a 60-year-old male at the Intercity bus stop on Moray Pl, after he was spotted with what appeared to be a firearm on Sunday morning.

That man was located but was uncooperative, and was pepper-sprayed.

A black plastic toy gun was located inside his jacket pocket.

He was arrested and charged with possession of an imitation firearm.

It was not the only case of its kind, with a man found with a large bayonet after trying to enter the Dunedin District Court on Saturday morning.

The bayonet and metal sheath were revealed by the metal detector, and the man was charged with possession of a knife.

It was unclear why the man was in court, which was for overnight arrests, Bond said.
